Patient’s right to pastoral care

1.Introduction

The main aim of each health care unit (hospital, residential medical care facility, hospice and other units) is to perform specified medical service designed to help patients recover from illness. As far as it is possible, a given illness should be cured or its effect should be limited in compliance with up-to-date medical knowledge. Aside from patients’ rights such as the right to health service and the right to medicinal products and devices, there is another right in Polish legal system – the right to „pastoral care”.

On the one hand, that right limits are set by the patient’s declaration as to whether they wish to participate in religious practices of a given Church. On the other, the limits are set by the legal system itself, for it allows that right to be exercised by followers of the Churches approved by Polish law.
