Background

1. The EU has finalised its banking package legislation in light of the implementation of Basel III international agreements in the EU. The EBA plays an important role in the Basel III implementation in the EU as it will be expected to deliver on mandates in a broad range of technical areas. Following the 27 June 2023 political agreement reached between the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament on the proposal put forward by the European Commission on 27 October 2021 on the banking package, the texts agreed have been finalised by the co-legislators in trilogues .
