An overview of the institution of diplomatic asylum - the case of Senator Roger Pinto Molina

1.Introduction

A concept of diplomatic asylum is one of the most controversial international public law ideas. View on the matter clearly divides the world of legal professionals and academics into those denying the legal basis of such institution and those who consider it asa form of political asylum, being regulated by few international conventions. Some countries, like United States of America, have clearly stated that they do not recognize the institution of diplomatic asylum . The others – Latin American States – are officially granting diplomatic asylum though, indicating the Convention on Diplomatic Asylum (Caracas, 1954) as the legal basis of such decisions.
